Northern Uganda is primarily inhabited by over 10 major ethnic groups, with the region's population predominantly composed of Nilotic-speaking peoples. While Uganda as a whole has over 56 recognized tribes, the Northern and West Nile regions are historically known for the following, among others:
- Acholi: Primarily in Gulu, Kitgum, Pader, and Amuru.
- Langi: Primarily in the Lango sub-region (Lira, Oyam, Kole, Apac).
- Alur: Primarily in Nebbi, Zombo, and Pakwach.
- Madi: Inhabit the areas of Adjumani and Moyo districts.
- Lugbara: Located in the West Nile sub-region (Arua, Maracha, Terego, and Koboko districts)
- Kakwa: Primarily in Koboko district.
- Jonam: Found near the Nile in the West Nile region
